Best citizenship by investment: compare your priorities in 2026
There is no universal best citizenship by investment programme. First establish eligibility and the legal outcome, then compare the cost for your household, access to your intended destinations, processing stages and ongoing obligations. A lower contribution does not establish a better programme or a lower all-in cost.
| Route | Initial outcome | Passport |
|---|---|---|
| Direct citizenship | Nationality after approval | Separate issuance |
| Investor residence | Residence status | Later naturalisation if eligible |
| Special merit | Individual assessment | No fixed purchase entitlement |
If your priority is the lowest published contribution
Nauru and São Tomé and Príncipe each publish a US$90,000 starting contribution in this snapshot. Nauru’s offer is time-limited through 31 December 2026. The fee schedules differ, and affected adult dependant completion in São Tomé remains paused. Use the lowest-cost guide and the individual profiles before treating either as suitable.
If you are applying with a family
Use the family-of-four comparison only for a principal applicant, spouse and two children under 12. Then check your actual children’s ages, financial dependency and any relatives you plan to include. Contribution brackets and screening charges can change the result. A lower single-applicant amount can be a poor guide to family spending.
If you need a particular travel destination
Check current UK, Schengen, US or Canadian rules in the destination selector. A visa exemption, an electronic travel authorisation, a conditional eTA and a visa-issuance restriction are different rules. Assess your intended journey and passport type; a headline visa-free-country count does not answer whether you can make that trip.
If you prefer to retain an asset
Compare eligible property and other investment routes separately from donations. Türkiye’s qualifying property threshold is US$400,000 with a three-year title restriction. Dominica’s US$200,000 approved-property route adds government fees from US$75,000. Holding, valuation, taxes, project approval and resale conditions affect the cash exposure.
If speed is your priority
Compare the stage each official processing target describes. Approval in principle is different from nationality or passport delivery. Document preparation, interviews, payment and biometrics can add stages.
How to make a defensible shortlist
Select two to four routes in the comparison. For each, confirm eligibility, legal outcome, an itemised household quote, official-source dates, travel rules and continuing obligations. Exclude any route that fails a requirement you cannot compromise. A recommendation for one person is not a global programme ranking.
